NOAA's Shoreline Data Explorer

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA)
Shoreline Data Explorer web site provides user's access to both
current and historical high-resolution digital shoreline of
the United States and it's possession's. NOAA's Shoreline Data
Explorer allows users to:
· View available vector shoreline project boundaries
· View vector shoreline data
· View and download FGDC compliant metadata
· Make printable maps
· Download vector shoreline shapefiles
The development of the shoreline data explorer represents a
new turning point in web based technology for the National Geodetic
Survey. NOAA's Shoreline Data Explorer uses ESRI's ArcIMS (Internet
Map Service) software to view and disseminate vector shoreline
data. With the help of NOAA's Coastal Services Center NGS was
able to bring into the data base much of the historical shoreline
data, digitized in a vector format from the preexisting topographic
surveys. The web based program also shows all of NGS' contemporary
digital photogrammetric shoreline. The shoreline data explorer
will provide the user with a greater opportunity to access vector
shoreline data that before was not readily available. While,
at this time, this information is not intended for navigational
use, it will be very beneficial to GIS users who are looking
for up to date shoreline information.
